ABC’s of Pastured Poultry-Thursday July 15th- 6:30-8:30pm. Heritage Pastures, 2343 Stanton Hill Road, Nichols. Learn how to raise poultry on pasture. Whether your’re just exploring options for using your land or you are already raising poultry, this workshop is for you. Class fee is $10/person or $15/household. Cornell Agro-forestry Tour- Tuesday July 20th- Do you want to learn how to use your forest for more than just firewood and timber? If so, join Professor Ken Mudge at the MacDaniels Nut Grove on Tuesday July 20, from 6:30-8:30 pm. This hands-on workshop and tour will demonstrate how to inoculate logs for mushroom production, show how to grow ornamentals in the forest, feature edible plants that can be incorporated into a forest setting, and show ginseng and goldenseal production in naturalized forest beds. Permaculture concepts are also being employed to reduce honeysuckle and channel water flow down the hillside setting. All exhibits will be presented in a forest setting. The tour requires considerable walking and restrooms are not accessible.  Preregistration is required and space is limited. 2010 Fruit Field Days - Wednesday  and Thursday July 28th and 29th- Cornell University will host the event at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, NY, on Wednesday and Thursday, July 28 & 29, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m each day. Grapes and berry fruits will be the focus on July 28, and tree fruits will be addressed on July 29. Fruit growers, consultants, and industry personnel are invited to tour field plots and learn about the latest research and extension efforts being carried out by researchers on the Geneva and Ithaca campuses, and on commercial farms elsewhere in the state. The focus will be on all commodities key to New York's $300 million fruit industry: apples, grapes, cherries, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and other berry crops. Pre-registration is required, and can be done either online (via credit card) or by mailing in a check plus the registration form, available on the NYSAES home page under "Events" (www.nysaes.cornell.edu), on the Cornell Fruit web page under "News and Events" (www.fruit.cornell.edu), and through Cornell Cooperative Extension regional fruit program newsletters. New York Nut Growers Association Meeting, Saturday, July 31st- The New York Nut Growers Association will hold its summer meeting at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY Plant Science Building, Room 329, on Saturday morning, July 31rst. There will be presentations on commercial walnut growing in New York State, and on the 1,000 canker disease of black walnut.  Participants will tour of the Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic.  There is no charge for the meeting.  Complete details are on http://www.nynga.org/ Any Questions? Exploring a U-pick Berry CSA- July 15th 2010 10:30am-12:30pm- Kestrel Perch Berries, 220 Rachel Carson Way Ithaca, NY 14850 (Tompkins County) Kestrel Perch Berries offers 200 shareholders in the Ithaca area 6 to 8 weeks of U-pick small fruit (strawberries, red and black raspberries, red and black currants, and gooseberries). “Pay-as-you-go” U-pick extends the season into August and September (blackberries, fall red raspberries). Small-Scale Woodlot Management: Low Impact Harvesting Workshop- Saturday July 24, 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM, Angus Glen Farm, Watkins Glen, NY-. Sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension Schuyler County, Arnot Conservation Education Program and NYFOA Southern Finger Lakes Chapter. The workshop emphasizes three areas: safety, silviculture, and technique. Participants at this workshop will learn how to inspect equipment and tools, utilize safe practices, understand basic silvicultural principles, and make appropriate tree selection choices for multiple ownership objectives. Also, participants will observe directional felling using a felling plan and observe the use of an ATV and arch for moving sawlogs and firewood. The course is designed for novice to intermediate woodland owners and anyone interested in learning about and discussing sustainable woodland practices.  The 4th annual Biomass Bio-energy  Workshop- July 28th, 9:30 – 3:00- will be held at the USDA-NRCS, Big Flats Plant Materials Center. There will be speakers, a wagon tour and demonstrations. Speakers will include representatives of private industry, Cornell University, Penn State University, USDA, and NGO’s. Energy crops to be discussed: grasses, willows, hardwood chips, sorghum and canola. There will be a $10.00 charge for lunch, Call 607 562-8404 for more information.
