ONGOING MARKETS DURING JUNE 2010:

Ithaca Farmers Market Tuesdays at Dewitt Park, Ithaca (corner of N. Cayuga
Street and Buffalo), from 9am-2pm (market runs from 5/4 - 10/26).

Ithaca Farmers Market Thursdays at Dewitt Park, Ithaca (corner of N. Cayuga
Street and Buffalo), from 3pm-7pm (market runs from 6/3-10/28).

Congo Square Market Fridays from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm June through September at
the Southside Community Center, 305 South Plain Street, Ithaca.

Ithaca Farmers Market Saturdays at Steamboat Landing from 9am to 3pm. (market
runs from 4/3 - 10/30, reduced hours until 12/18).

Center, Cayuga Center for Healthy Living. Free and open to the public, light

FAIR SHARE FIESTA on Tuesday, June 15, 7:00pm-1:00am at the Oasis Dance Club
(formerly the Common Ground) at 1230 Danby Road, Ithaca NY. Mark your
calendars for this Latin-themed local foods dinner and dance party to raise
funds to support Healthy Food For All, a project that provides subsidized CSA
(Community Supported Agriculture) shares for families with limited incomes.
7:00-9:00 pm - Dinner prepared by Chef Mandy Beem-Miller; 8:30 pm. - Latin
Night club Survival Dance lesson; 9:00 pm - 1:00 am - DJ Michael Luis spins
hottest Latin night club music - salsa, merengue, bachata, reggeton, timba,
cha cha...and more! Dinner will feature tacos stuffed with local meats, smoked
tofu and beans. Tickets are $15/person and include salads and dessert. Cash

Fresh from the Garden: Homemade Jams

Participants will use freshly-picked local fruit to make a cooked strawberry
jam (reduced-sugar recipe) and a strawberry freezer jam, and will take home a
jar of jam from the workshop. Cost is $15. Register by calling (607) 272-2292

Friday, June 25-27, 2010

Gardeners Pot Swap and Recycling Event. All day Friday June 25 through Sunday
June 27, you can leave your plastic nursery pots, trays and cell packs in the
designated area off the CCE-Tompkins main parking lot at 615 Willow Avenue in
Ithaca. You may take away as many pots as you can use, too! Plastic that is
left after the weekend event will be taken to a recycler for processing. This
is a free opportunity for gardeners to recycle their plastic plant containers
instead of throwing them away.

Throughout June 2010. Meat Processing and Food Safety Certificate Program.
SUNY Cobleskill will be offering this program in January and June. This
intensive hand on training program is designed to provide the knowledge and
skills students require entering employment in the meat processing industry.
Students will be skilled in sanitation, food safety, slaughter, meat cutting
and processing. As part of the students’ preparation for the industry, the
program consists of specialized training in the accuracy of cutting, knife
handling, portion control, merchandizing and the utilization of all products.
The program includes: Safety and Sanitation, Species Harvesting/Slaughtering,
Primal Fabrication, Retail Cutting and Wrapping, and Customer Relations. The
cost for this program is $2,995 which includes textbook, hard hat, frock, 5
inch boning knife, 12 inch butcher knife and safety cutting glove. For more

FINGER LAKES CHEESE TRAIL on Jul 10, 2010: 10:00 AM - 05:00 PM at various
farms. Learn about the wonderful variety of cheeses produced here in the
Finger Lakes by visiting our local cheese producers and sampling their
products. The Finger Lakes Cheese Trail is a new organization of 10 cheese
producers from throughout the Finger Lakes who make artisan cheeses from milk
produced at their family farms. Great cheeses are being made, ranging from
English style raw milk cheddars, cheese curd, gouda and swiss types from dairy
cow milk, to blue cheeses, chevre and feta from goats and sheep milk. Visit

GROTON'S FAMILIES: COOKING TOGETHER FOR FAMILY MEALS on Jul 09, 2010: 11:00 AM
- 01:00 PM at the Groton Fire Department Community Room, 108 East Cortland
Street, Groton, New York 13073. Are you interested in learning how to make
quick, healthy meals, creating and sampling recipies that focus on vegetables,
sharing your skills with you kids, and making healthy food choices for your
family? Join us for a six session workshop, 2 hours each, a family focused
cooking class for parents and kids. Who can participate? One parent or
guardian with up to 2 children from the same household. Children must be
between the ages of 8 and 15 years old. Space is limited to the first 5
families who register. Childcare will be provided on site for younger
children. Workshop sessions are held Fridays, July 9, 16, 23, 30 and August 6
and 13. Sessions last two hours from 11:00 am-1:00 pm.

Boiling Water Bath Canning
Thursday, July 15, 6:30-9:00 PM at 615 Willow Ave, Ithaca
This class covers how to safely use a boiling water bath canner to preserve
tomatoes, fruits or pickles. Participants will receive updated information on
canning procedures and hands-on practice. However, no canned foods will be

ORGANIC GARDENING FOR BEGINNERS on Jul 20, 2010: 06:30 PM - 08:30 PM at 615
Willow Ave. Our grandparents were mostly organic gardeners, and now many
people see the advantages of being organic. If you don't know how to get
started, come to this class to learn the basics and ask questions. We will
cover everything from soil preparation to coping with weeds and pests. Fee:
$5. Pre-registration preferred. $5 fee, registration required.

Canning Vegetables and Meats with a Pressure Canner
Thursday, July 29, 6:30-9:00 PM at 615 Willow Ave, Ithaca
Learn the procedures for safely canning low-acid foods, such as vegetables and
meats, in a pressure canner. Get updated information on canning techniques,
and learn about the different types of pressure canners that can be used. No
canned foods will be taken home by participants. Cost is $15. Register by
