When you ask "why was there a split between Paul and the apostles?" you assume that there indeed was  such a split, which I agree with, but which some scholars definitely do not (for example Johannes Munck in recent decades, and also many in today's New Perspectives school on Paul).

Likewise, your statement "that Paul might have heard many stories about the historical Jesus, but he either rejected some of it or thought Jesus was too narrow in his outlook," is also rather controversial, but is an assertion that I likewise agree with.

If you would wish to see detailed documentation and argumentation in favor of your views on these contentious matters, I'll be happy to e-mail you, for your valued comments, the draft of a book I'm now working on about them, which is tentatively titled either The Event That Created Christianity  or else Jesus Without the Myth  (I haven't yet decided which, and I'll especially value feedback from any in the corpus-paul community on which title you all prefer).  In this work, I'm applying a certain legal/forensic methodology to reconstruct the historical Jesus from Paul's seven letters as "best evidence" about him that, nonetheless, has to be interpreted as being hostile testimony concerning that historical personnage. Since this viewpoint seems to coincide somewhat with your note, it might be of interest to you to see.

I guess my question would then be, why was there a split between Paul and the apostles?  It seems that the apostles must have believed that Jesus' mission was to the Jews, else there would not have been a Jerusalem conference.  Further, it seems that they must have believe his mission was to help them have a better way to interpret the Torah, else there would not have been a split.  It seems that Paul might have heard many stories about the historical Jesus, but he either rejected some of it or thought Jesus was too narrow in his outlook.

Is there some faulty reasoning to all of this?
