Vince,

The uncertainty over the historical identity of Paul's opponents at 1.12-18
is understandable precisely because the two groups here are rhetorically
constructed in a way that deliberately obscures the distinctives of their
"gospel" and so that Paul can relate everything to the issue of whether or
not they preach Christ in co-operation and partnership with Paul.

Thus the EUDOKIA and AGAPH group function as examples and the PHTHONOS, ERIS
and ERITHEIA group as counter examples for the Philippian audience. The
rhetoric of the letter, it seems to me, aim to secure deeper levels of
cooperation and partnership between Paul and the church.

There is nothing here to identify the issue as one of Jewish Christians v.
Paul and readings that posit such a situation are reading a particular
understanding of the Galatian situation into a very different epistle.

Yes there are examples of other groups falling out with Paul - the
Corinthian church may be one such example.
