I think the only ways in which a 1st-century synagogue is likely to be
identifiable in mainland Europe are (1) if it was the basis of a later
synagogue, as at Ostia (perhaps) or (2) if there's a building inscription.
The lack of archaeological evidence for such synagogues probably confirms
Jim Miller's suggestion: European synagogues in the 1st century weren't
purpose-built, or at least weren't buildings with any obvious
synagogue-like features.
