Thursday, January 13
=95 8P Lila Drum Bird (acoustic blues/folk)

=95 10P A Fragile Tomorrow (folk rock/pop/rock)
With an incredible stage show, catchy songs, and perfect harmonies, A
Fragile Tomorrow has made themselves known throughout the east coast
as one of the best up and coming bands out there today. The group
began as a three piece in the fall of 2003, comprised of brothers Sean
(vocals, guitar, mandolin), Dominic (drums, vocals), and Brendan Kelly
(lead guitar, mandolin). They shared a love for music and a desire to
make it, and what resulted in 2006 was the band=92s debut album Wishful
Thinking. That same year, a newspaper ad led Shaun Rhoades (bass,
vocals) to the band, and they have remained a four piece ever since.
In February of 2010, the band put out their 3rd record titled Tripping
Over Nothing. The album was recorded at Awendaw Green, a music
compound in Awendaw, South Carolina that is quickly becoming one of
the best places for music in South Carolina. When it came down to
production, it was an easy choice to have South Carolina singer-
songwriter Danielle Howle take the job. With 8 albums under her belt,
20 years in the business, and countless amounts of touring and playing
with the likes of the Indigo Girls, Hootie and the Blowfish, Ani
DiFranco, Bob Dylan, The Avett Brothers, and many more, Danielle Howle
is a road warrior who certainly knows her stuff. =93Working with
Danielle is very comfortable for us. She=92s always got ideas in her
head. She makes us feel very relaxed in the studio, and has really
helped us dig into our songs more and pull out the emotion in the
lyrics and music, which adds a whole new dynamic to the recordings=94,
says Sean Kelly. =93She understands these songs and knows how to bring
them to the next level. We couldn=92t have asked for anybody better this
time around=94. The album was released to much acclaim and got rave
reviews in publications like the Charleston City Paper and sites like
Powerpopaholic.

Tripping Over Nothing features guest appearances from some seasoned
musicians, including Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls, Peter Holsapple of
Hootie and Blowfish / the dB's, and Susan Cowsill of The Cowsills.

AFT then began touring in support of the indigo Girls. The success of
that tour helped them to gain a new fan base and a following
throughout the southeast. After the Indigo Girls tour, the boys toured
on their own and had successful shows night after night and continued
to make an imprint in peoples minds. Throughout their professional
career, AFT has shared the stage with the likes of the Indigo Girls,
Blues Traveler, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, Continental
Drifters, Danielle Howle, Doug Jones of Cravin Melon, Amy Ray, and
more.
The band=92s strong point is certainly their live show. High energy,
raw, fun performances make AFT a band to catch this year. At an AFT
show, there is definitely never a dull moment. =93We just love playing
together. The thing that keeps it fun for us is the idea that we can
be spontaneous with each other in front of an audience, and they
respond really well to it. It makes it so we always have something to
talk about after the show, and it makes playing the songs night after
night just as great as it was the first time we played them=94 says
Sean.
A Fragile Tomorrow will be around for a long time. With a new album
generating buzz all over the country, tons of shows, and an overall
desire to continue playing and recording together, there=92s no telling
where they=92ll go from here. =93We=92re just happy that people are
listening, and that people genuinely enjoy seeing us play and hearing
our songs. It makes everything else worth it=94.

Friday, January 14
=95 9P - Jon Shain Trio (blues/folk/acoustic) - $8 cover
*2009 International Blues Challenge finalist and 2008 Triangle Blues
Challenge winner
Jon Shain grew up in Haverhill, Massachusetts, a Merrimack River
mill-town that had already seen its better days by the time he was a
child in the 1970s. His family=92s business was a small textile dyeing
company, and he worked in the factory during the summers throughout
his teens. At the same time, Shain began to discover his love of
American roots music and songwriting, specifically drawn to the
narratives about regular people and themes of social justice.
Shain headed south to North Carolina in 1986, to study American
History at Duke University and to continue his musical journey, as
well. In addition to studying with jazz professor Paul Jeffrey, he
also had the good fortune to learn the piedmont blues tradition
firsthand by playing in Big Boy Henry=91s backing band. It was at this
time that Shain also got to meet and play with John Dee Holeman and a
number of the great older NC blues players. Shain's classes in school
were heavily concentrated in southern history, English, and world
religions. That mixture of the academic environment and the real-world
blues music is what has most informed his musical direction.
Jon Shain is the rare folkie who truly brings the "chops" to his
songs along with the lyrics. The last few years Shain has been playing
esteemed listening rooms such as Passim in Cambridge, MA, Caffe Lena
in Saratoga Springs, NY, and Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem, PA in
addition to doing some of the highest profile shows of his career =96
opening sold out theatre shows for John Hiatt, Keb=92 Mo=92, Little Feat,
and others.
When Shain is not recording or performing, he stays busy giving
private instruction in Piedmont blues fingerstyle guitar, and teaching
group workshops in songwriting and blues guitar. Whether in the one-on-
one atmosphere of the teaching studio or onstage sharing a song with a
roomful of strangers, Jon Shain is a natural communicator, keeping
students and fans coming back for more.

=95 10P Johnson's Crossroads (acoustic/americana/alt)
Johnson's Crossroad is taking their love of the old time mountain
music, bluegrass, and the Texas singer/songwriters of the 1970's and
putting their own stamp on the ever widening and increasingly popular
'Americana' genre - nurturing a sound they like to call "Appalachian
Soul.". The band was born in the bars of small town Lewisburg, WV.
Johnson's Crossroad performed the old songs they love and began to
craft their own material. As audiences began to grow founding members
Paul Johnson and Keith Minguez decided to head south over the Blue
Ridge Mountains to the budding music scene of beautiful Asheville, NC
where they found like-minded musicians and formed a touring band. The
debut album "Blood in Black and White" brings together some of
Asheville's finest musicians to perform JXR's original material. The
album is steeped in the traditional country themes of lost love, lost
fortune, lost time, and overcoming hardships, but Johnson's Crossroad
have clearly found a unique voice. With "Blood in Black and White"
they give country music fans an alternative to the "polished" sound,
though staying true to the roots that have made country music great.
