Thursday, January 14
Ben Davis + The Jetts (http://www.lovitt.com/artists/bendavis.html)
Filthybird (http://www.myspace.com/filthybird)
Wood Ear (http://www.myspace.com/woodear)
The Pinhook, Durham

11:00 - Wood Ear
10:00 - Ben Davis and the Jetts
9:00 - Filthybird

Filthybird are from Greensboro but half of 'em just moved to the greater Alamance/Chatham area, and are opening a guitar shop in downtown Graham, god bless em. They make beautiful crazy psychedelic artpop.

Ben Davis & the Jetts have a brand-new album out, and it's their most "organic" (i.e. rockband playing rockmusic together) yet.

Wood Ear are ex-Greensboroians/current Durhamites & former members of The Dirty Version & another band whose name I'm totally blanking on.

Thursday, January 14
Willie Heath Neal (http://www.myspace.com/willieheathneal)
John Howie & the Sweethearts
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Thursday, January 14
The Tomahawks (http://www.myspace.com/jeffcrawfordmusic)
Bellman Barker (http://www.myspace.com/bellmanbarker)
Dylan Sneed (http://www.myspace.com/dylansneed)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Thursday, January 14
Jokes & Jokes & Jokes (http://www.myspace.com/jokesjokesjokes)
Lollipop Factory (http://www.myspace.com/lollipopfactory)
Gutter Glitter (http://www.myspace.com/gutterglitternc)
Reservoir, Carrboro

Friday, January 15
Lost in the Trees (http://www.lostinthetrees.com)
NC School of Science and Math, Durham

Lost in the Trees have worked up a set of full orchestral arrangements of their already-pretty-orchestral chamber-pop, and they'll be joined by the NCSSM Orchestra to perform them.

Friday, January 15
The Old Ceremony (http://www.theoldceremony.com/)
The Dex Romweber Duo (http://www.bloodshotrecords.com/artist/dex-romweber-duo)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Old Ceremony are fresh off their performance at Raleigh Undercover as the Velvet Underground, so maybe there'll be a few surprises thrown into their set.

Dex Romweber Duo (Dex and his sister Sara) are, at their best, as good as or better than any other band that Dex or Sara have ever been in.

Friday, January 15
Inflowential (http://www.myspace.com/inflowential)
Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies (http://www.myspace.com/violetvectorandthelovelylovelies)
Lake Inferior (http://www.myspace.com/lakeinferiormusic)
FTB Soundsystem
Pour House, Raleigh

Friday, January 15
The Moaners (http://www.themoaners.com/)
Liza Kate (http://www.myspace.com/lizakate)
Lonnie Walker (http://www.myspace.com/lonniewalker)
The Pinhook, Durham

12:00 - The Moaners
11:00 - Lonnie Walker
10:00 - Liza Kate

The Moaners and Liza Kate both record for Holidays For Quince, which I think means we can expect the first Moaners record in quite some time later this year.

Friday, January 15
The Public Good (http://www.myspace.com/thepublicgood)
Greg Humphreys
Bustello (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bustello/182575038059)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

The Public Good are a DC-based band with a buncha guys who used to be The Popes, one of the most-fondly-remembered Chapel Hill bands of the '80s.

Bustello also contain a few old fogeys, namely John Plymale & Jody Maxwell of the Sex Police, and Ben Clarke of Metal Flake Mother. Sound-wise they're very much in line with MFM, which is, as far as I'm concerned, the best news in a very long time.

Greg Humphreys also did time on the Chapel Hill scene of the late 80s/early 90s in his band Dillon Fence.

Friday, January 15
Gray Young (http://www.myspace.com/grayyoung)
Free Electric State (http://www.myspace.com/freeelectricstate)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Free Electric State covered The Pixies at this past weekend's Raleigh Undercover, and by all accounts they totally nailed it.

Saturday, January 16
Cantwell, Gomez, Jordan (http://www.cantwellgomezandjordan.com)
Grappling Hook (http://www.myspace.com/torchmaraudersgrapplinghook)
Clawform
The Pinhook, Durham

12:00 - Grappling Hook
11:00 - Cantwell Gomez and Jordan
10:00 - Clawform

The Grappling Hook are calling it quits (at least for the next 10-15 years) due in part to some impending new family responsibilities on the part of some of the members. And thus the circle of life spins 'round once more. Here's what drummer Evan Rowe wrote:

"And to dust they shall return. Only four short years ago, they gathered at a Durham eatery, and the drummer marveled at the singer's predilection for ketchup. A fast bond was formed. Amps were turned up and up and up. Hundreds of pounds of gear were loaded up and down staircases, masks were donned and removed, and wherever the Dodge Ram did deliver them, they were led by The Hook.

Aided by brothers in the shadows, they scaled balconies of condemnable buildings, stole strong drink from onlookers, and released a slab of vinyl, the very Drums of War and a Damn Hell Ass Gong propelling them.

And now, exercising restraint, before the images of combat are forever burned upon their retinas, so they may see the smiles of their children and a clear sunrise, these four shall slip into those same shadows, the never-ceasing battle closing behind them as water. Their absence may be noted later--in a moment away from the fray, yea, perhaps near a campfire, as those who fight on warm their bloodblack hands and breathe deep the acrid redolence of not victory but neither defeat, only unceasing struggle. The eyes of these will meet in that night and a thought will pass unspoken, that these four did carry The Hook into the fray, and did follow it to its end without retreat, without a look behind save to rally us onward, ever onward."

Saturday, January 16

Natural Science

Sunday, January 17
des_ark (http://www.des-ark.org)
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham

Every couple of years Aimee drops by the studio (the place I first met her, a dozen years ago, when she was 16 & just another Youth Voice Radio hooligan) & runs through a new batch of songs for us. The past couple of sets have turned out well enough for her to burn a bunch and sell them at shows (in lieu of the nearly-finished studio album, "Don't Rock the Boat, Sink the Fucker," that has been nearly-finished for so long as to drain the word "nearly" of all meaning). 4:00 p.m. at 88.7 FM or wxdu.org.

Sunday, January 17
