Uncle Woody Sullender (banjo) and Kevin Davis (cello) began playing
within the fertile Chicago free improvisation community, although both
were interested in incorporating he "traditional" music of their home
states of Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee as well as
classical, noise, etc..

Their recent album, "The Tempest is Over" (on dead ceo), has won
praise from the international music community (Wire Magazine, Signal
to Noise, Chicago Reader, etc.) for the dynamic range of expression
the duo can get out of the unique pairing of banjo and cello. The
album documents the musical relationship they have forged via touring
the East Coast (playing in such diverse contexts as a trio performance
with famed electronic composer Pauline Oliveros in Kentucky to a
recent duo performance in John Zorn's East Village space, the Stone).

** Kevin Davis bio:
Kevin Davis is an improvising cellist/composer originally from
Appalachian Tennessee. His interest in the discipline and practice of
improvisation led him to Chicago in 2002, where he has worked with
Fred Lonberg-Holm, Guillermo Gregorio, Tatsuya Nakatani, Dave Rempis,
Jeb Bishop, Wilbert DeWoode, Jim Baker, Glenn Kotche, Tim Daisy, Kyle
Bruckmann, Matt Bauder, Olivia Block, and Head of Femur among many
others. Kevin's current work applies internal logic or structural
devices to improvised performances, using indeterminate elements in
compositions and working with extended, often timbre-oriented cello
techniques.

** Uncle Woody Sullender bio:
Under the not-so-clever moniker of "Uncle Woody Sullender", Woody
Sullender performs improvised banjo music, playing with and against
the cultural baggage of the instrument. While alluding to the
"traditional" musics of his home states of Virginia and North
Carolina, he explores a diverse plane of plucked string music from
around the world as well as incorporating punk, noise, free jazz,
etc.. He has performed with Pauline Oliveros, Fred Lonberg-Holm,
Michael Zerang, Kyle Bruckmann, Carol Genetti, members of the
Vandermark 5, TV Pow, and Cheer Accident, among others. In 2004, he
collaborated with sound artist Maryanne Amacher, incorporating his
banjo recordings into "TEO! A sonic sculpture" which won the Golden
Nica at the 2005 Ars Electronica festival. Among other activities, he
can currently be heard Sunday nights (Monday mornings) 12am-3pm, DJing
on WFMU.
