Hey Alex,

No worries! Most of us at School of Open are not official educators. School of Open is being built on P2PU, which is all about exploring new peer to peer learning models. If you or anyone else on this list is interested/free tomorrow, P2PU is holding a Course Creation 101 virtual working session, details posted below.

Otherwise, please feel free to join the school of open discussion list and introduce yourself! https://groups.google.com/group/school-of-open

Best,
Jane

Hello folks

Just a reminder of the Community Call tomorrow, at the times below, on this etherpad: http://pad.p2pu.org/p/community-20121129

It's an All Hands, which means we'll be building! This week, we're working on making great courses. In preparation, please take a look at the following questions:

Also, Vanessa has  put together a really brief deck for the call (under 5 mins):

Hi, of any help, I come from bits and bytes background side of the house. Thanks, Alex.

Hi Jane,

Thanks for yours. I am interested in contributing to the School of Open initiative. But please bear with my not being an educationalist. Delighted to offer my best effort.

Regards,

Alex

Hey Alex - agree that there is a lack of existing resources on OER for K-12. This is actually a course we will be building over the next few months as part of School of Open. Thanks for the links to the additional resources - will definitely look into incorporating. I'm in touch with Karen Fasimpaur who is leading the School of Ed initiative, and hopefully she will also help contribute. If you or anyone on this list is interested in helping to develop this (or any other course), let us know!

Greetings,

Last Saturday I was Precious Blood Secondary school attending the launch of the school's refurbished library, courtesy of The Rita and Charles Field-Marsham Foundation partnership. Also demonstrated was their brand new white board see at the bottom of http://kenyalearningsolutions.com/ Mentioned OER during the demo and a teacher noted down my contacts to pursue the conversation further.

Reviewed http://pad.p2pu.org/p/school-of-open-resources and https://p2pu.org/en/schools/school-of-open/ and opine that OER emphasises/focusses on university/higher learning institutions, or at least thus far - save for a few links, such as, OER for K-12 Livebinder - http://content.k12opened.com  "OER: New Tools for Elementary Classrooms", published by TCEA - http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/naylor/TEAQ0212/index.php?startid=3#%2F12 (I can get a more "remixable" format.) and School of Ed OER course - https://p2pu.org/en/groups/pd-on-p2pu-oer-in-k-12/

Question:

Could someone (Catherine?) point me to OERs that speak to some/any African countries education system? That would greatly help inform the next conversation with the school teacher.

with many thanks,

Alex

Greg,

This is a great list of resources. I've added to http://pad.p2pu.org/p/school-of-open-resources - a list of resources that School of Open course creators can build on to develop courses as part of the School: http://schoolofopen.org/.

Perhaps other resources listed at the pad may be of use to this group as well.

If anyone would like to get involved in the School of Open, don't hesitate to shoot me a note.

Best,
Jane

Hi All

As a starting point, let me share some of the great resources we use and some of the (hopefully) great resources we’ve developed to help African educators start navigating around the concept of OER.

Creative Commons Video Introduction

·         We usually introduce people to CC with this great video available from the CC website: http://creativecommons.org/videos/creative-commons-kiwi its a great introduction to CC licenses – maybe one day we can have an “African” version rather than relying on a “Kiwi” one ;)

Some really useful OER publications from UNESCO / Commonwealth of Learning that you can download and share:

·         A Basic Guide to Open Educational Resources (OER) (July 2011)

·         Guidelines for Open Educational Resources (OER) in Higher Education (November 2011)

·         Survey on Governments’ Open Educational Resources (OER) Policies (June 2012)

·         Perspectives on Open and Distance Learning: Open Educational Resources and Change in Higher Education: Reflections from Practice (June 2012)

·         Exploring the Business Case for Open Educational Resources (September 2012)

OER Africa was a project specifically setup to advocate OER in Africa. The website has a lot of great information. There are sections on:

·         Understanding OER – Introducing OER, FAQs and links to some of the UNSECO/COL publications

·         Finding OER – tools for finding OER as well as links to the OERs collected by OER Africa (in the areas of Health, Agriculture, Teacher Education and Foundations Skills)

·         OER in Action – showcasing African OER initiatives

·         OER Toolkits – OER licensing and policy implications, especially useful for higher education, toolkits on Licensing and Copyright and Policy Development and Review

·         And more…

There are stacks of other great resources out there, but hopefully this will be more than enough to get people started…

Regards

Greig
