Dear ccAfrica-OER list members:

this mailing list was set up a few weeks ago and I believe it is time to get it off the ground.

As a first step, I suggest we try to identify what members of this list expect to be discussed here. I am taking the first stab at this by suggesting some topics - but please feel free to disagree and/ or to add to this list.

As CC community members in Africa, many of us will be or have already been approached by different stakeholders to explain the concept of and reasoning behind OERs; the relationship with CC licensing and sustainability considerations. Apart from these more general questions, stakeholders wonder (a) where they can find quality OER material and (b) how to create OER materials themselves.

My initial aim for this list is enable all of us to have authoritative answers to these questions and provide case studies of successful OER use from around the world and, perhaps even more importantly for the purpose of our list, from Africa.

I am well aware that this is a bit of a repetition from other OER mailing lists, but why don't the more seasoned OER specialists on this lists start off by providing all of us with some basic links to information regarding the above questions. This should in my view include links to the UNESCO/COL Guide on OERs, the OER Africa project as well as the excellent "why oer matters" videos.

Lastly, while Alex and I are happy to moderate this list for the time being, we would very much like to identify potential OER champions for the CC OER Africa initiative to take over from us. So if anybody on this list is interested in assuming some responsibility in managing this group please let us know.

That's it for now. I am looking forward to our discussions on this list.

Best,

Tobias
