CREATIVE COMMONS EXPANDS TO SWEDEN WITH PREMIER LAW FIRM LINDAHL

Advocatfirman Lindahl will lead the license translation and work to expand global access to Sweden's culture

San Francisco, USA, and Stockholm, SWEDEN -- August 19, 2004 -- Creative Commons, a nonprofit dedicated to building a body of creative works free for copying and re-use, announced today that it would expand its International Commons (iCommons) project to Sweden.

Advocatfirman Lindahl, one of Sweden's leading law firms, will lead the effort.

First announced in March 2003, iCommons is Creative Commons' project to disseminate its machine-readable copyright licenses worldwide and make them useful in a variety of legal systems.

As the lead institution, Advocatfirman Lindahl will coordinate a public effort to translate the Creative Commons licenses literally and legally for use in Sweden.

"We are very pleased to be able to work with Lindahl," said Lawrence Lessig, Chairman of Creative Commons and professor of law at Stanford University, where the organization is headquartered. "Sweden's technological advancement will help it play a crucial role in the iCommons effort in Europe."

"We are very pleased to be able to bring the Creative Commons movement to Sweden," explained Mikael Pawlo, the iCommons Swedish project lead, who will field comments on an archived email discussion on the Creative Commons website.

Sweden joins some fourteen other countries which have already published their first license drafts for academic discussion. A further five countries -- Brazil, Finland, Germany, Japan, and the Netherlands -- have completed the license drafting process; Creative Commons offers those translated licenses on its website today.
