Blender is an excellent mature, active Open Source project, available for all
platforms: http://www.blender.org/

There's AYAM as well: http://ayam.sourceforge.net/

Lots of free Renderman implementations:
http://www.renderman.org/RMR/OtherLinks/index.html#Renderers

For video, there's Kino: http://kino.schirmacher.de/

Other Free Software media resources:
http://lib.fo.am/cgi-bin/view/Libarynth/FreeMediaTools

For frame editing there's CinePaint (formerly Film Gimp), developed and used
by Hollywood effects houses. For bitmap editing there's Gimp. For vectors
there's Sodipodi and Inkscape.

Any other Free software you need, let me know. And start hassling the
developers to add CC metadata to the file formats. :-)
