A bit belated (I've been away) - but for those concerned about the
Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) treaty, here's a good petition to
sign.

For those who haven't heard about it, ACTA is billed as increasing IP
enforcement globally - but the government negotiators have been very
reluctant to say how. This petition calls for certain protection for consumer
rights.

Dear ALCC list subscribers

On 10 April 2010, concerned citizens attended a conference in Wellington New
Zealand, as part of a true grassroots effort to raise the profile of concerns
surrounding the murky Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). Key note
speakers were Michael Geist and Kim Weatherall.

ACTA is an agreement that will increase intellectual property rights
enforcement. It is under covert negotiation by the United States, European
Union and Japan, with countries such as Australia along for the ride.

The outcome from the conference, styled the 'Wellington Declaration', is a
strong statement that voices a resolute set of expectations from the public
interest perspective. It is designed to inform governments of public concerns
to be taken into account in the current round of talks, starting today,
Monday 12 April 2010.

Participants drafted the Wellington Declaration in recognition that ACTA
threatens to upset the delicate balance of Australian and New Zealand
copyright law, a balance that protects consumers, enables access to
information and is fundamental to the success of the digital economy.

The Wellington Declaration is available here
<http://publicacta.org.nz/wellington-declaration/> . Please see attached a
media release from the ADA. IT News published a story, including quotes from
myself, available here
<http://www.itnews.com.au/News/171842,activists-sign-petition-to-open-up-acta-talks.aspx>
.

Since opening for signature on Sunday, 11 April 2010 at 3pm, support has gone
viral with over 1,700 people and rising adding their names. The deadline for
signature is Tuesday, 13 April 2010.

I would encourage all those who value the future of Australian innovation,
research, education and access to knowledge to add their voice to the
Wellington Declaration and digitally sign the petition.
