The laptop was given to us with a dead hard disk but appears to work with a replacement. DOS works fine (other than LLPRO not installing itself over nullmodem cable, and crashing when I tried to transfer that way).

BL2.1 2-floppy and RAMDISK versions boot on this 233MHz Compaq laptop with 32MB RAM. Both loadlin.

DSL linux (syslinux) and Knoppix (isolinux) and UBCD (isolinux) also boot.

BL3.5 LILO 2-floppy (even the version on UBCD) and LILO loop do not boot - Machine Check Exception (reported last year). Someone else suggested adding to the lilo boot line nomce (no machine check exception). Loop BL3 does not even use LILO so that won't work here. Other ideas?

I got ramdisk BL2 and loop linux on here with DOS llpro via parallel transfer cable. I was hoping to transfer BL3 and BL2 ext2 files via pcmcia network cards. I will transfer BL3 via llpro and use that to transfer BL2. PLIP often does not work on laptops. I could also try using David Moberg's syslinux setup with USB storage support, and an external USB hard drive, or a parallel port zip drive in DOS, since BL3 is under 96MB. Any other ideas?

Why might both LILO and loadlin/loop BL3 not work, but BL2 floppy and ramdisk loadlin do work?
