But there is some basis for it in Exodus 28:35. The bells on Aaron's robe
are to make a sound when he enters the Holy Place "so that he will not die"
(NIV). Could this have been (mis?)understood as "in case he dies"?

That legend/myth first appears in the medieval kabbalistic writing _The
Zohar_. (Zohar Achrei Mot 67a and Zohar Emor 102a)



It has no other basis. It is not mentioned in the Tanakh, the
Mishnah, or either of the Talmuds (Babylonian or Jerusalem).
