Depends on the scanner and the versions. On some versions I have to
apply a small patch to my sane backends to get my particular model to
work (all it does is enable the define to disable the version check, and
I did tell the author of the backend about it).
I don't have a scsi scanner so can't be much use to you; mine's usb.
Try #sane channel in freenode, maybe? Or you could email the maintainer
of your backend.
