[permaculture] mats on earth floors

We have found that only smooth (but not too smooth or they stick to the floor and the sealed portion of the floor is ripped off when they are removed) and breathable materials can be used to cover earth floors, such as soft carpet or cardboard.  Anything with texture will make dents and scratches in the floor.

We followed the advice of a couple popular cob books and used beeswax mixed with linseed oil to seal our first floor.  This never lost its stickiness and was totally unsatisfactory.  After this, we started using 50% beeswax/50% carnuaba wax mixed with citrus oil to wax the floor and this cures faster and is not as sticky.
