What were the seasonal lows when they were eating them in the 40's and 50's?
Could shifting weather patterns (warmer-colder), and you being near the zone
line be at issue? Not enough chilling hours possibly not happening today?

I mentioned several years ago about finding plenty of Sparkleberry
trees/shrubs on my property which although locals recite eating them by the
handful in the forties and fifties, I haven't seen a berry here although
they do bloom
