A man in Iowa with alkaline soil found that if he just added peat to
the soil, the pH soon went back up and the blueberries did poorly. He
discovered that if he sank a barrier, such as a plastic garbage can
with the bottom removed, and mixed peat with the soil in the can, that
the blueberries did fine. WIth the barrier in place, alkalinity from
the adjoining soil was unable to leach over and raise the pH of the
treated area. He had been successful this way for several years
before he passed on.
