I'd consider disease-resistance too, if your new to fruit - apples
are subject to lots of problems that one wouldn't know about from
boughten fruit... Liberty is good fresh (although taste is entirely
personal), and Goldrush is another disease resistant one; there are
We have very heavy clay too, and fruit trees in general don't like
clay, but if you have good soil drainage it's probably fine. Do
read up on rootstocks, as some are better on sand and others on
clay, and make sure you get one suited to your conditions; we have
M-111 or M-7 (semi dwarf), but I do have a couple on M-26 (dwarf)
that seem to be surviving.
