Jim,

It may depend on the variety.

My 'Black Reward' black currants ripen over a couple of weeks. We usually make two
big pickings and one smaller one.

We pick my running our hands over the strig and all the fruits come off easily -
if they are ripe.

Red Currants are more difficult. My 'Jonkheer van Tets' have to be picked two or
three at a time. If I wait until most are ripe, they all squish as they are
picked. I'm thinking of deleting my Red Currant bush.

How are Black Currants to be harvested?

My red currants all get ripe at the same time but my black currants ripen
one-at-a-time.
