my problem turned out to not be a TDS problem (which is cool).
i needed to increase my outgoing port range. (upped from default 5000 to
aout 20000 or 30000)
also ended up recompiling the kernel to increase maxusers so as to not
run out of buffer space either.
thanks to anyone who made suggestions.
