Since reading that chapter, it's become my practice to build in a separate
tree. Usually it's called "build", so it goes something like:
$ cd build
$ ../configure [options]
$ make
For some reason, "make dist" doesn't work that way. It runs, but the
snapshot it generates puts some files in the wrong place, and its configure
script generates non-working Makefiles. The only success I've had with
"make dist" is in-tree, with ./configure.
It's a little inconvenient for me, because to make a distribution from
current CVS, I have to checkout a clean tree temporarily. It also indicates
a bad assumption somewhere in the autotool inputs.
If anyone has the time and inclination to figure this out, I would be
grateful.
The symptom I've seen is that sock_errno isn't defined, and some files
inadvertently wind up in win32 instead of include.
