Welcome, msarto.  

Use the jTDS driver.  http://jtds.sourceforge.net/.  I think it will do what
you want.  

Yes, you can use the driver on one machine to connect to a server on a
different machine.  You might want to ask the question at
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=104388.
