For academic works there is often an exception inside copyright laws, 
that even allows to use nonfree images for such purposes. You will have 
to check if this might apply inside your country and under which 
conditions. If not, an correct mentioning of the license and the autor 
of the orginal image would be enough, even if you modified the image. 
The thesis itself would not fall under this license, since it is an own 
work that is separate from the image. (comparable to an article in 
Wikipedia that is licensed under CC and GFDL, but incorporates images 
with a different license)
