[cc-community] [cc-licenses] Public Domain Mark - Invitation to Comment

Dear all,

Just a quick thought - shouldn't we have a "possibly PD" mark? I know
that it is much better to mark things that we are certain about. But
there's a large body of works, especially more current ones, that are
"possibly" public domain. And knowing that we are uncertain about PD
status is also a useful information about a work - it's more than no
information. Wouldn't it be good to mark this grey zone as well and
single out these work from those that are "certainly not public domain"?
Otherwise GLAM institutions with public domain collections will
inconsistently have some works in the standardized marking system
(CC-licensed and PD works) and other unmarked.

Which makes me think that in theory there's sense in creating a
similarly standardized and metadata-enabled "under copyright mark" -
even if ARR from our perspective is often not the best solution, it
still wouldn't hurt to standardize the way ARR content is marked.

These are quick thoughts, so I might be completely wrong in my thinking :)

Best,

Alek
