Things like agetty and pppd and Xvesa have been refusing to die until I 
name them and kill pidof.  What does -9 do?  Why does kill pidof work 
when kill number does not.

That works it sometimes takes several times.  I may have loaded the same 
thing more than once but ps only lists it once.
