Subject: [TypicalGirls] ReBust tetras,
Little Annie, Nedra Johnson
Ir is great to know that the Tetras will be playing at CBGB...
but it is not the original lineup. Julia Murphy replaced Laura Kennedy
when they reformed in the late 90's. I had signed the Tetras to a label for
indei artists called Beauty which I was deloping for Mercury Records where I
was A VP of A&R, During the recording Laura up and split soon after
and Julia came in .. they were all friends. Laura became a real estate agent .
She and her partner eventually moved to the land of lesbian moms in NJ. Last
heard Laura had split ot lands unknown. Any one have an
update?
Beauty died with four records in the can including the Tetras
when Polygram was sold to Seagrams and the Mercury died as an active label
except in name in one 24 hour day. .. It was a dark time for me. Beaut,
the Tetras and David Clement (a terrific record if I do say so myself ... and
I have copies of the unreleased album from the advance press run if anyone is
interested) Capitalism doesn't care about art or artist ... just
commerce.
I was disappointed to see Dee Popp the male drummer
speaking for the band know for its assertive female musicians in the Don
Lett's doc Punl'd. But I was not surprised that Lets did this as as good
as his footage was of the period it was soooo boy centric. Not that Dee
did anything wrong except suggesting he talk wiht Laura, Pat or Cynthia. I
mean he is a drunner.
Pat Place is considered by many musicians of
that time as totally unique in her approach to playng bass. She once said in a
rare interview that she had to teach herself back in Cleavland because no male
would help her learn .. so she watched closely how they played and found her
own, unduplicated style of bass playing .
Little Annie is a terrific
painter and showed a series of comptenpary ikon's a few years back. I believe
she has a show up now in NYC and it should not be missed . Anyone know
when and where?
Finally the best (to my ears) ex punk riot grrl
record released this year is Nedra by Nedra Johnson(Big MouthGirl
records) .. funky, sassy , sexy, gospel snips in a record that might
make you blush at its honest erotic pleasure . her web site is http://www.nedrajohnson.com/

Speaking of old zines . . . I've been lurking
on this list for a while and am finally getting around to mentioning
this. I've been trying to locate old issues of Riot Grrrl
zines, music related or otherwise for the Barnard College Zine Library in
NYC. The library is also looking for any zines, old, new, out
of publication or still running, that are related to feminist and women's
issues. Here's a little intro to the collection:
The
Barnard College Library in New York City is home to a growing
zine collection that focuses on feminist culture and
politics. This is an invitation to former and current zine
creators and collectors to archive and make accessible through the
Barnard Library any zines (defunct or still in publication) that are
appropriate for the collection. The collection encompasses a
wide variety of zine genres that address a number of feminist and
women's issues and experiences, including activism, anarchism, body
image, ethnic identity, menstruation, parenting, sexual assault, sexual
orientation, urbanism, and war. The collection's website
outlines the institution's zine collection mission statement and
collection policy. It can be viewed at http://www.barnard.edu/library/zines/. The
website also includes a link to access the library catalog (CLIO), where
you can view a list of zines the library currently holds.
If
anyone out there wants their old/current zine to be included in
the Barnard Library Zine Collection, or if you have a collection of
zines that you would like to donate to the library, please contact me at
zines AT barnard.edu. At
the moment, we are especially interested in acquiring zines that document
the Riot Grrrl scene, though we are eager to accept zines of any time
period or subject as long as they are in accordance with our collection
policy guidelines.
If anyone has questions, please contact me at zines AT barnard.edu. And please
feel free to forward this message to other zine collectors or
creators?we are trying to get the word out to as many people
as possible.

seen her in years--can I post a photo on this thing--or do people

Trivia that Lydia, and maybe no one else, will
care about: My ex-boss at VH1 used to play with Annie Anxiety aka Little
Annie - she used to come up to the office and visit!
