Excellent point. I think that miking the amp would emphasize the "scapiness"
of the sound. Most violinists who go electric seem to like to use a direct
box, which makes for a smoother, rounder tone, which is the opposite of what
you're looking for. You might try emphasizing the high end on the amp as
well. The (especially early) Raincoats sound is very trebly.
I've read that Vicki Aspinall was classically trained, but on the first
album, she seems to play as if she were a beginner, leaning off pitch
sometimes (on purpose for effect I assume) and flying up and down the neck
of the instrument at random. (Those outrageous instrumental breaks on
"You're A Million" or "In Love", for instance.) Very free,
who-cares-if-it's-perfect, punk rock violin. Which is why we love that sound
to this day.
