On my box it fails like this:
make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/mc-4.6.2-pre1/edit'
if gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I.. -I/usr/include/glib-2.0 -I/usr/lib/glib-2.0/include -march=nocona -m32 -pipe -DPIC -fPIC edit.c:554: error: 'WEdit' has no member named 'charpoint'
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/mc-4.6.2-pre1/edit'
make[2]: *** [edit.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/mc-4.6.2-pre1'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
Personally I think using a prerelease should be an option, not something
mandatory unless using the stable version breaks other spells or doesn't
compile anymore.
best regards
Florian
