Dear European permafriends
and colleagues,
Finland (finally!) has a
permaculture association!
Our purpose is to promote
and develp permaculture
and cold
climate permaculture
solutions in Finland. We
do this by collecting
and distributing
information about cold
climate permaculture,
offering and promoting
permaculture training as
well as other events, and
participating in the
international permaculture
networks in the Nordic
area and beyond.
With warm regards from
Finland,
Dominik Jais and Mari
Korhonen from the
"International affairs and
networks" team
Permaculture
Iceland
Recently
the Nordic Permaculture
Festival travelled to
Iceland. It was an
exploration of
possibilities in The Sands
of southern Iceland.
Windswept black volcanic
sand and rock with a
carpet of arctic herbs and
lupines was the backdrop
for a long weekend of
coming together from all
over the world, creating a
lot from the abundance of
an affluent society,
calling for the Nordic
feeling and blacksmithing
with a real viking.
Before the festival, six
new certificate holders
completed the PDC. They
presented some of their
designs at the festival
with proper celebration
following.
Formidable Vegetable Sound
System came to play permie
songs and formidable food
was served in the newly
built outdoor kitchen,
complete with rocket
stove, art installations
and cacao cups ;-)

New Baltic
LAND cooperation
Recently, four countries
around the Baltic Sea got
a project started with
Nordplus funding. The
Learning, Activity,
Network and Demonstration
(LAND) project are
starting this year in
Sweden and Finland, while
Estonia will have its
first permaculture LAND
demonstration site next
year. Denmark is helping
with training of LAND
councellors and
assessors.
Around 22 delegates from
the four countries will be
meeting in Sweden, Finland
and Estonia to visit
potential LAND centres and
work on learning
materials. To be
continued...
EuPN
Permaculture Event
Calendar
At
the EuPN Communications
& Image working group
we regularly get requests
to publish courses,
workshops and other events
in a common calendar. Some
of the advantages of such
a calendar with lots of
events in Europe are: easy
to find what's on if you
are looking for something
interesting to do;
organisers can easily find
a date to coordinate with
other events in the
neighbourhood.
We would like to add more
benefits for organisers -
and ourselves - by
introducing automatic
distribution of event
information: less work,
avoiding double entry for
organisers and web site
editors as well as full
control and ownership for
organisers.
Event
publishing standard
We propose to start a
pilot using ESS (Event
Standard Syndication - an
emerging standard
application of RSS). This
protocol enables the
computer power of web
sites to collect and
distribute event
information automatically.
All we need to do is keep
a list of web site
addresses that have
something to report, i.e.:
the web addresses of event
organisers and venues.
Using this system our
calendar would always show
the most accurate and
current information about
events.
Calling
permaculture event
organisers
We are now looking for a
few organisers and venues
that are interested in
participating in a test of
the system. We will
provide technical
assistance, if you want it
of course.
Want to give it a go?
Please send an email to comms@permaculture-network.eu with
your contact details and
we will get back to you
for more details.
The
GROW Observatory is a
European-wide project
engaging thousands of
growers as citizen
scientists.
We will learn together,
using simple tools to
better manage soil,
while contributing to
vital global
environmental
monitoring. We would
love a strong
permaculture presence in
the project.
The GROW
project is funded from
the European Union’s
Horizon 2020 research
and innovation
programme, under grant
agreement No 690199.
Permacultuur
Magazine
by Caroline Siepman
A
small group of
permaculturists in The
Netherlands en Belgium
came together in 2014 to
explore the possibilities
to start a magazine about
permaculture for the Dutch
language area. We
crowdfunded issue number 0
so we could start with
Permacultuur Magazine
in January 2015, and now
we are looking forward to
number 8 that will appear
in September 2017. At the
time of writing we have
more than 550 subscribers
and we have a number
of ambassadors in the two
countries who introduce
the magazine to possible
new subscribers.
Our core value is
‘designing for a resilient
future’. All aspects of
permaculture stop
by: edible gardens,
economy, social
permaculture, transition,
farming, market gardening,
… We attend to theory as
well as practice and
skills.
The
people behind Permacultuur
Magazine are Dutch and
Belgian volunteers.
Together we deliver a
positive, helping and
informing magazine four
times a year. The articles
are written by people of
the editorial staff,
supplemented with extern
authors. We share
knowledge and hope to
connect permaculturists
with each other and with
the permaculture projects
in The Netherlands and
Flanders (Belgium). With
each issue we hope to
contribute to the
development of
permaculture in our
climate zone. It’s a huge
but satisfying job.
The challenge is that the
members of the editorial
staff live far away from
each other, so we don’t
see each other often. We
try to meet together two
times a year. The rest of
our communication is by
mail, telephone, skype and
google drive. We see the
making of Permacultuur
Magazine as one big
permaculture project,
designing the magazine
itself but
also our teamwork. A
beautiful and valuable
adventure!
