Thanks Steve,
What I meant was that you are renowned for the way you go about things — and
that your default commentary is a call to debate and often to shoot from the
hip — my call to you would be to consider the following axiom, “Judge not
lest ye be judged”…
In section 1.02 ‘Regenerative Design & Living Principles’ of the ‘Regrarians
Handbook’ (Doherty & Jeeves, 2015) there is a list of Ecological Design
principles penned by Sim Van der Ryn and Stuart Cowan from their book,
“Ecological Design” (1996). One of these is “Everyone is a designer”. In the
context of how many people think that may not be correct, however in the
context of Sim and Stuart it implies that everyone has the capacity and that
this capacity should be encouraged.
At what point does one become a designer in the eyes of the great Steve Hart
I wonder, and perhaps you might choose to elaborate on what you mean exactly
or are you separating out ‘Permaculture Design’ from ‘Design' — if it is the
former then I really don’t give a toss — Its been some time since I described
what I do as Permaculture Design, and having designed my own methodology of
methodologies I’m extremely comfortable with that — however design is what I
occupy most of my time doing.
As for my supposed emotional reaction, anyone who has their professional
practice and honesty questioned is going to react — sure, when someone has a
go I’ll have a go back and yes that’s an emotional response — beyond that
somewhat reptilian response, I’m certainly not going to let you or anyone
else get on any stage in the public domain have my professional practice
diminished as you have in my case. I am incredibly able to accept feedback, I
am excited about it, and have created multiple forums to do just that —
however to say that I am not a designer is just something I am not going to
cop — especially when it is said in a manner that is so careless and broad
brush.
Therein lays my challenge to you Steve — back up what you have to mouth off
on so that we can engage in some effective feedback. I’ve nothing to hide as
a professional designer, I’ve made plenty of blues and have plenty of
successes and have applied integrated design to social, economic and
ecological systems — and you?
I’m assuming that you can use a search engine? Whilst it grates with me
personally, I have done more than enough self-promotion to have you find
ample opportunities of examples of my designs not just on paper but in
practice.
Finally, for now, I put it back to you to refer us to your body of work and
examples of how its played through over time — perhaps you could reach out to
Andy Goldring and take up the spot I’ve vacated as a Keynote at IPC UK and
show the world all that you have to offer as a successful designer who is
involved in developing honest design initiatives...
