Dear Permies:
In Collapse by Jared Diamond, one of the smallest societies that has
managed to survive over a long period of time is, "Tikopia, a tiny,
isolated, tropical island in the Southwest Pacific Ocean..." "With a
total area of just 1.8 square miles, it supports 1,200 people, which
works out to a population density of 800 people per square mile of
farmable land." It has been continuously occupied for almost 3,000
years. With 640 acres per square mile that translates to just 0.8 acres
of 'farmable land' per person.
