Hello all!
We've been so out of touch lately, I just wanted to send an update to any
interested community. We bought a house off of Craigslist in Macon, GA, for
$3000, and after the 2500 mile trek from Washington state, were pleasantly
surprised to arrive at a 1000 s.f. brick shotgun with really great bones and
a long 1/4 acre with a mature pecan tree in the exact spot I would've placed
it in my design!
Neighborhood's a bit scary, but we're making friends, and hiring
out-of-work locals to help with the remodel. On Saturday we went to a
permaculture gathering at Salamander Springs, near Milledgeville, which took
us right through Udan Farm (hello Isabel! Sorry we missed you!), and into
the arms of some great new friends. Can't tell you how wonderful it is to
find these folks so quickly in such an incredibly conservative region. The
one real downer of the evening being the news that the state has cut all
funding for the arts from their budget.
Since the power company turned our power on without inspecting the house,
we've run a minimal wiring setup, mostly to cover ceiling fans and a few
strategic outlets, stove, washer, freezer, and a refrigerator modified Bob
Waldrop style;) My brother and I ran a pex manifold system with 1/2"
point-of-use lines that deliver instant hot water, clustered as the uses are
right around the water heater. We'll add some passive solar redundancy
soon. Working on a passive AC system with brick greenhouse on east end and
underground pipe through garden. Chickens and nanny goat forthcoming.
More update later; gotta run!
