Early on, Montgolfier's marvelous balloons were co-opted by Napoleon for
aerial surveillance against the Dutch and Austrians, at Mauberge. They became
our first spy satellites!

The balloon and camera approach has a long history...that famous photo
of the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake is from a balloon.
And many people have done this since. Don't use the cop copter! ;)
