Filing for 501c3 status is not difficult and does have many advantages, the
primary one having the ability to offer tax advantage to donors to your
organization. You can also apply for foundation grants that are,
ordinarily, only available to non-profits. Most of the work I have done in
the developing world has been thanks to grants to the Permaculture
Institute.
