LGBs. Sparrows, maybe? I never did learn all the little gray birds.
Hmm, I don't recall if I saw a bird eating the comfrey, but the
pattern of bites at the edges of the leaves was the same as on the
broccoli leaves that I did see them eat, or the sorrel in the next
garden, which gets eaten down to the ground over the winter. They eat
the comfrey only in the winter, when there is little else; no one
bothers it in the summer. I'll have to pay attention when I start to
see the comfrey leaves getting bitten this year, assuming that it
hasn't died back from the cold by the time it becomes palatable to
them and they've run out of better greens. But I have lots of
broccoli this year, so maybe they'll stick with that.
This morning I saw a phoebe on the fence, probably looking for
insects. Sometimes when I'm in the garden, I see the LGBs hopping
around five or ten feet away. They especially enjoy rummaging through
newly placed compost, or ducking under unsecured bird netting. I
leave a saucer of water for them, so that if what they're looking for
is moisture, they can have a drink instead of a broccoli leaf.
Scrub jays are around a lot, too, but I see them mostly when another
gardener comes with a bag of peanuts to feed them. I've never seen
them eating from my garden.
