There are also near-surface and surface systems for leach
fields http://www.infiltratorsystems.com/ . There is a mound system that
a friend of mine had approved in the coastal mountains of California. I
haven't found the link to information about that system, but it was
entirely above grade, in an area that drained steeply into a riparian
corridor; completely satisfying the requirements of Environmental Health,
Fish and Game and the Coastal Commission. The infiltrator system depends
on a permeable substrate, but it is near-surface and therefore would be in
a friable horizon. The mound system relies on imported materials and is
independent of the substrate.
I'll try to get more information about the mound system. I am aware that
temperature constraints in many parts of the world will mitigate against
the mound and near-surface leach fields, but I just wanted to point out
that there are possibilities.
