thanks for the two responses on oak prob's. i've also elimanated tent worms
as the culprit as these webs form a fine sheath around the trunk and limbs.
i've pulled away the webs and found no insects beneath- very mysterious...
any more thoughts???

think of is the "tent-worm", but that wouldn't be on the trunk that I know
of. We have tentworms in Michigan, and they hang off of the branches (leafy
ends)...Definitely something to do some research on.
