POSITION: Associate Director
LOCATION: Takoma Park, MD
WEBSITE: www.igc.org
Michael Shuman, author of Going Local: Creating Self-Reliant
Communities in a Global Age (Routledge, 2000), is looking to hire an
associate to help lead, develop, and administer a variety of community
development projects. These projects include
launching a community-friendly poultry company on the eastern shore of
Maryland called Bay Friendly Chicken (BFC),
creating a small-business venture-capital fund in New Mexico, building
buy-local enterprises in Maine and upstate New York,
and preparing newsletters, articles, studies, and books on innovations
about local living economies and small business.
Roughly half the job will be to carry out a U.S. Department of
Agriculture grant to Bay Friendly Chicken – specifically to
finalize the business plan, create a web site, prepare weekly “e-zines”
on the poultry industry, and sell the firm’s stock to small
investors in Maryland. A quarter of the job will be to undertake
research and writing for the other projects. The remaining
quarter will be administrative – updating databases, answering calls
and e-mails, corresponding, reporting, bookkeeping, and
filing. A one-year commitment is required, though the job could last
longer.
Applicants should have at least a bachelors degree (preferably a
masters, or higher), with a specialization and experience in
some aspect of community development, finance, or business start-up.
Strong writing skills (preferably demonstrated through
prior publications) are required, along with a strong interest (and
preferably experience) in social ventures and other
entrepreneurial initiatives. Also a plus are skills in MS-Office,
electronic communication, and web site building. (Salary $35-40k)
