Subject: [permaculture] Tree gardening and the Chaga people of Mt. Kilimanjaro
Date: Tue, 25 Nov 2003 21:54:36 -0800
Chaga people live on the slopes of "Kibo", or Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania,
Africa
and have been there for a long time. They practice a unique form of
agriculture:
tree gardening or replication of jungle within their cropping zone, the
survival
and sustainability of which is owed to the natural resources of Kilimanjaro.
Part of the religious tradition they have developed involves growing the
masawe plant
which they use in a religious observance honoring their ancestors.
