Another good one for alternative cultural options:
"The Disposessed," by Ursula K. LeGuin
A parable of a first/third world split (literally - different planets),
except in this case the "third" world made a choice to do things
differently (e.g. design their own culture) and eschew the "first"
world...written decades ago but still very relevant.
And for showing the dangers of too much ego-driven conscious purpose
without enough whole systems understanding:
"The Lathe of Heaven," also by Ursula K. LeGuin
The British-made movie of this novel is excellent btw, though hard to find
(it was shown on PBS here in the USA a couple years back).
