Pesticide risk indicators have received a lot of attention, recently. The =
most popular indicators currently in use are those that address the =
frequency of application and the amount of active ingredient applied per =
hectare. These indicators, however, take little account of the potential =
environmental effects of pesticides, as they do not consider the fact =
that pesticides differ considerably in their rate of degradation, their =
mobility in the environment and their toxicity to non-target organisms.
In several Member States of the European Union various pesticide risk =
indicators have been developed which do attempt to take into account =
these differences between pesticides. In order to analyse, compare and =
evaluate these indicators, a group of researchers of different =
disciplines started CAPER (Concerted Action on Pesticide Environmental =
Risk indicators), financed by the European Commission. Within CAPER we =
have addressed questions such as: How do the existing indicators assess =
pesticide risks? What are strong and weak points? For what purposes can =
the indicators be used?
We would like to share our findings with a broader group of policy =
makers, researchers, and representatives of farmers' organisations, the =
pesticide industry and environmental groups. Therefore I would like to =
invite you to a two-day conference in Amsterdam on the 18 and 19 March =
1999. Please find attached the conference programme.
If you are interested please send your name, organisation and address to =
Bea de Groot (beadegroot@clm.nl) and she will send you a definite =
registration form in January. The costs of the conference are Dfl. 150,-. =
Please react before 25 December 1998. We aim at a balanced representation =
of different countries and interest groups. Therefore, should we become =
over subscribed, we may need to carefully selected from those who have =
registered.
I hope to welcome you in Amsterdam.
Yours sincerely,
Joost Reus
co-ordinator of CAPER
on behalf of all CAPER participants
