| My first inkling of an element of Dante in Percy probably occurred as I experienced through Percy the ongoing civil, social and religious degradation in Love in the Ruins. Compare the picture Percy paints with the sign over the gates of hell in Canto III of Inferno: Per me si va ne la città dolente, per me si va nell’etterno dolore, per me si va tra la perduta gente. You proceed through me into a sorrowful city, you proceed through me to eternal pain, you proceed through me [to be] among a ruined people. Who is better than Dante and Percy at painting a picture?
