Thanks for sending this to the list Jim. Nothing breaks the 4 o'clock in the afternoon feeling quite like seeing something from the long quiet Percy list in my email! I've been meaning to report on the most recent Walker Percy Center conference. I can say without reservation that it was the best professional conference I've attended. Of course, I'm usually struck by malaise brought on by the overtly "intellectual" environment of many conferences, which can feel like an exercise in oneupmanship. This conference established a sense of community from the outset, something I commend Rhoda and Mary for creating. The level of scholarship was impressive, as was the genuine unpretentiousness of the group as a whole. I imagine WP would have been pleased with what he heard, had he been there. For me, a highlight came in the number of non-English professors present, and in meeting other Percy list members. Sent from my iPad
