When I read Lancelot, I see Percy as Percival and
Foote as Lancelot. Foote as the hard-edged, passionate gnostic; Percy as
the burned out sinner-saint, quietly arguing with him. Either way, the
background of the friendship between the two men in the novel struck me,
especially after reading the letters, as a fictionalized image of
the friendship between Percy and Foote. I was surprised neither of the
Percy biographies commented on the possible connection.
