Title: Re: [OA-monographs] Monograph thoughtsThe idea of a pool of specialist PhDs is an important one: I can think promptly of two – one by a leading photographic technician on colour managemnt in Photoshop and challeges for printing, using a lot of high-res images (mostly his own) - the colour separations alone are too expensive for hardcopy. The other is a study of innovation in museum display using a detailed case study of one institution – far too specific to get even a local publisher to close a deal.
Hillis’ note:
I think there may be a lot of wonderful mss out there that are too long for journal articles and too short for books, i.e. 90-150 ms pp. OHP might well do a great service to scholarship by publishing these in order to prevent authors from trying to stretch 100 pp. into 250 pp. Some topics just come out 100 pp.,
This is especially the case in some social science ends of humanity: poltical philosophy, some histprical work. Occasionally a journal will run a special issue with a single text, but that’s extremely rare outside of law journals. One journal I work on has serialised essays in the past, but again a problem.
