This is the time when Dolgo crabs ripen here in the Twin Cities. "Dolgo"
means "long" in Russian. This cultivar was named for the long, oval fruit.
The shape does not remind me much of a pear, however. Dolgo crabs make
WONDERFUL ruby-colored jelly. Also, the tree is very disease resistant. I
had one in my front yard, but had to take it out because the neighbor was
unhappy with the fruit that dropped on his property. -- Sam Brungardt in St.

Has anyone ever seen a very oblong crab apple? I've never seen such a thing
before but found two different instances while visiting here in the
Minneapolis area. Here is a photo of one. It looks like a miniature pear.
They aren't ripe yet but still have a juicy and fruity flavor right now.
