I just planted my trees this past spring. It is supposed to get -11
tonight and -1 high tomorrow in western PA. I am worrying about my trees
not being well established enough to survive. Should I be trying to pile
hay around them or something else?
Thanks, and hope all of your plants do alright!!

It sounds like it'll be worse for the more southern folk than for us up
here. The low predicted for tonight here is -12, which is pretty low, but
within the 'normal' range for us. We've also currently have about 20" of
snow on the ground, a lot for us. I've experienced -22 at my location, and
we typically get lows below zero 5-10 times a winter. But not for the last
several winters. Unfortunately I planted some semi-hardy things last spring
like jujubes and mulberries that often die back here in severe winters, and
I was hoping for a couple more mild winters for them to get established
before it got really cold.
Hopefully the snow and the straw I piled around them will balance out the
-12 temperature and the 30 mph winds!!
