I'll put in my two cents. Go to your search engine and type in apple scab
pictures and you will see many apples that look the same as yours. Also I
have a variety of apple (Frostbite) that gets cracks that isn't scab and was
told that the tree may be deficient in some trace elements. I bought a bag
of micronutrients and put it around the trees and it greatly reduced the
problem. You have to be careful because too much of some elements can cause
problems too. Just another thought for you.

Thanks for the replies. Our local extension office isn't good for much
unless you're shopping for pesticides/herbicides. I'll try to attach a
photo of apples picked from the tree in the background. We've had no rain
since 6/25, but I have moved a sprinkler around the orchard from time to
time.
